Green keeps hold on second base
By GUY CURTRIGHT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Rafael Furcal's return to the Braves'
lineup didn't mean Nick Green's exit.
Instead of moving veteran Jesse Garcia
from shortstop to second base, manager
Bobby Cox kept the rookie there.
How could he have done anything else?
The 25-year-old Green is doing a great
Marcus Giles impersonation.
In his first at-bat during Sunday's 5-1
victory over Los Angeles, Green had an
RBI double. In his second, he drove in a
run with a single.
After eight major league games, the
former Duluth High School and Georgia
Perimeter College standout is hitting
.360 with six walks, four doubles and
four RBIs. The only game he didn't get a
hit was Randy Johnson's perfect game.
"This is something I never thought would
happen," Green said. "It's a dream come
true."
Giles is expected to miss six to eight
weeks because of his broken right
collarbone. That means Green, who did
make his first error Sunday, will keep
getting a chance to show what he can do.
"Marcus is a great player, so those are
big shoes to fill," said Green, just a
.256 minor league hitter before this
season. "I know I can't really fill
them. But this is my opportunity to show
that I can play in the big leagues." |
