One more
for Halsey? |
BY JIM BAUMBACH
STAFF CORRESPONDENT
June 21, 2004
LOS ANGELES - When Brad Halsey returned
to the Yankees' clubhouse after winning
his major-league debut Saturday, he saw
13 new messages on his cell phone. "I'm
normally not that popular of a guy," the
23-year-old lefthander said.
That may change soon. Joe Torre all but
ruled Kevin Brown out for Saturday's
game against the Mets, which means
Halsey most likely will get a second
start in the majors. Halsey, who allowed
two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings
Saturday against the Dodgers, likely
will start Friday's opener of the
three-game series followed by Jose
Contreras on Saturday.
Brown, who is on the disabled list with
a strained lower back, played catch
yesterday and will throw off a mound for
the first time since the injury while in
Baltimore this week. But Torre said
Brown will need at least two mound
sessions before returning and said that
will not happen by Saturday. Brown is
eligible to be activated Friday.
Which puts the spotlight back on Halsey,
who said he celebrated his first win by
going out to dinner with his agent, Tom
O'Connell, his brother and a few others.
He kept the scorecard and two baseballs
- his first strikeout and his first hit
- and more than enough videotapes of the
nationally televised game. |
