Rays
outfielder Damon Hollins has been named the American
League Rookie of the Month for May. Hollins hit
safely in 10 of his first 11 games with the Rays
after being recalled on May 2.
Hollins
topped all major league rookies with six home runs,
15 RBI, 19 runs and 48 total bases in May. In 27
games, he led all AL rookies in batting with a .325
average (26-for-80) and five stolen bases. He also
recorded six multi-hit games during his first month
as a Devil Ray.
May 11
against Chicago, Hollins swiped second base three
times. The win by Hollins marks the third time a
Devil Ray has captured the Rookie of the Month
award; Rocco Baldelli capture the honor twice during
the 2003 season.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Although CF Rocco Baldelli's
absence continues to be felt by the Devil Rays, two
of the players acquired as his temporary replacement
- OFs Damon Hollins and Alex Sanchez - more than
held their own during May.
Hollins wasn't promoted from Triple-A Durham until
May 2, but he led American League rookies in May in
batting average (.325), runs (19), stolen bases
(five), home runs (six) and was tied for the lead in
RBIs with the White Sox's Tadahito Iguchi (15).
Hollins' six homers were a franchise rookie record
for a month, and, once he overcame his unfamiliarity
with the dome at Tropicana Field, he solidified a
sketchy outfield defensive situation. At age 30,
after 10 years spent mostly at the Triple-A level,
Hollins is the leading candidate for AL Rookie of
the Month.
''Hollins has done a nice job,'' Rays manager Lou
Piniella said. ''He really has.'' |
