Padilla
Joins the Mix |
Right-handed reliever Juan Padilla
joined the Mets on Saturday, his first
stint of the year with the club.
Padilla, 28, was with the Mets in Spring
Training and left his mark on the club
with an assortment of card tricks,
entertaining everyone in the room on
several occasions.
In the weeks since, Padilla has taken
his brand of showmanship on the road
with Triple-A Norfolk, proving he was
all business. He was 3-2 with a 1.44 ERA
and 11 saves in 36 games for the Tides,
whom he represented at the Triple-A
All-Star Game this week in Sacramento,
Calif.
Padilla said the call to the Majors,
which he received in Syracuse, N.Y.,
where the Tides were playing Friday,
wasn't totally unexpected.
"I'd been waiting for it, being down
there and doing my job," Padilla said.
"I guess it was just experience, being
down there. I had more control of my
pitches, going after hitters."
Randolph said he remembered seeing
Padilla during his brief six-game stint
with the Yankees last season, and was
high on the right-hander's changeup and
consistency.
"He's in our bullpen, no special role,"
Randolph said. "He's just like anybody
else. He's just an arm to help us get
people out. He had a nice year at
Triple-A, so we're hoping he can
continue to give us that energy he has." |
