Notes:
Redding waiting for his start
By John Schlegel / MLB.com |
DENVER
-- Tim Redding was itching to contribute
to his new team, and he got that
opportunity on Wednesday night.
Redding, who will make his debut as the
Padres' No. 5 starter on Sunday against
the Pirates, recorded an out in relief
of Adam Eaton in the fifth inning
against the Rockies, getting Todd Greene
to ground out to second base.
That was a nice ice-breaker, but
Redding's true role is as a starter.
Though he was eager to make his Padres
debut sooner than Sunday, Redding knows
his opportunities to contribute aren't
going to come with the same consistency
other members of the rotation enjoy.
It's the nature of the role.
"Mind over matter," Redding said. "It's
something that you've just got to deal
with and make the best of it."
Aside from Wednesday's quick outing, it
will be 10 days between starts for
Redding by the time he takes the mound
against the Pirates. Padres pitching
coach Darren Balsley doesn't see a
problem with that.
"For him, with the change of scenery, it
might be better," Balsley said of
Redding, who was acquired from Houston
just last week. "It gives him some time
to reflect on what he needs to do to be
successful here.
"I've had some conversations with him
about how we're going to approach his
outings and the type of pitcher we need
him to be. This gives him more time to
reflect on that."
Redding came to the Padres after lefty
Darrell May struggled during Spring
Training, and both pitchers finished
camp with strong starts. Redding got the
nod to start the season, but Padres
manager Bruce Bochy has said May will
get some starts down the road as
matchups permit.
For Redding, it's all about being ready
to do the job as No. 5 starter when he
gets the opportunity.
"It's a delicate situation," Redding
said. "We were both brought in from
different teams to do a job. Right now,
it's my spot to lose. I'm just going to
go out there and do everything I can to
help this club win." |
