Thompson Proving He
Fits In Pinstripes:
Scott Stanchak- Published
June 4, 2003
Kevin Thompson joined the
Trenton Thunder on May 19 and has been one of the team's
most consistent hitters since. Rated the number two
centerfielder in the Yankee organization, Thompson was
drafted (31st round of '99 draft) out of Grayson City
Junior College.
At Grayson, Thompson won back-to-back Junior College
Championships as a shortstop/second baseman. When you
ask Thompson about his past he is too modest to admit
his championship accomplishment, it took his teammate to
point it out.
"I got drafted out of high school and I didn't sign
(with the Twins)," Thompson said. "I went to Junior
College, right outside of Dallas, Grayson Junior
College."
When Thompson got to the organization, his transition to
the pros was made easier by a few people.
"We had guys in the organization like Ty Hawkins and
Kevin Higgins and I really enjoyed being around those
guys. They were more like your friends then telling you
what to do."
After spending only seven games in the infield, he was
transferred to centerfield where he would spend the next
few season's being groomed into one of the top athletes
in the historic Yankee organization.
In 2002, Thompson led the organization in steals while
only being caught 11 times. Scouts say that Thompson
makes consistent contact along with solid bat contact
and is a great judge of the strike zone. Baseball
America even rated his as the Top Defensive Outfielder
in the organization.
"I just got to go out there and get my rhythm down and
have at it in the game."
With Kevin Reese, the number one centerfield prospect in
the organization, already roaming that position for the
Thunder and Bernie Williams possibly making a rehab
start in Trenton, we could get a glimpse of the past and
future all in one game.
"I just take it day-by-day, man, just stay faithful to
god and just hope to go out there and work hard and it
will work out one way or another."
